While working to create typographic patterns as a mini assignment in my typography class, I fell down a rabbit hole of pattern design and landed on stained glass design. I was immediately hooked. Getting inspiration from church windows and old stained glass catalogs I decided to try my own hand at creating stained glass window designs.
all of the Stars
As someone who loves stars and astronomy, seeing the many 4 pointed star designs in the catalogs I looked through immediately inspired me to design a stained glass window based on stars. Initially, the design was just outlines but to really delve into the ‘stained’ aspect of the stained glass I colored the design. This project inspired me to use more color in my designs and to delve into digital coloring more.
Endless Inspiration
From then on while I was sitting around or in between jobs at work I would be doodling stained glass designs and looking at the designs in catalogs for inspiration, I continued on to make 3 other designs. The three designs were based on both the designs I saw in the catalogs and on just the figures and imagery that I felt would look good in that style.
A new passion
This project really ignited a new love for pattern design in me and just brought my use of shape and color to a new level. I felt more confident in my digital illustration and in my use of illustrator tools. Through this project I also got to think a lot more about the more unique applications of design, My designs don’t have to just be printed on paper or published online, they can also be laser cut or embroidered, the possibilities are endless and I would like to continue to explore that with my future designs.
