All of the branding projects I had done before this project were for companies or “brands” but this was a bit different. This was branding for an event, and Initially, it seemed like a daunting task but the New England Synod had a clear theme and direction they wanted for their assembly so I wasn’t as lost as I expected to be.
Forward Motion
One of my favorite things about being a designer is how many different industries I learn about and interact with throughout the projects I take on. I worked closely with my professor from the very beginning to make sure that I could portray the Synod accurately and respectfully through my designs. The theme of “Journey Forward” and the idea of looking ahead to where the future takes you immediately made me think of a bird taking flight and inspired some sketches immediately as I heard about it.
Creating something special
The bird that I had initially sketched was great, but it needed more. Initially, I vectorized the sketch almost exactly as is but It didn’t look right. I tried a lot of different layouts but I settled on using a circle as one of the other main components of the logo. Even then, there were a lot of different ideas and designs I was thinking about, some complex some more minimal.
Representative Typography
To really fit with ‘Journey Forward’ I had initially decided on a font pairing where ‘Forward’ was italicized to show that kind of motion. The pairing ended up looking very formal and like a wedding invitation and I was advised to look at a more modern kind of pairing. I had a lot of options and I couldn’t choose just one. In the end, there were two font options for all of the final designs I presented.
Brand in Use
While my design was not chosen for the Assembly, I was still very proud of the designs so I chose my favorite of the options presented and decided to create some other products to use the branding in.
A new experience
This project was definitely something totally new to me. It was my first time working on a project for an organization so foreign to me and It was my first time designing a brand for an event. I learned a lot and I was proud to be able to show my designs to real clients even if they didn’t get chosen.
